Charles I of Spain summoned Albrecht Durer to show him Mayan and Aztec artifacts (an ear of maize perfectly rendered in gold was in this treasure). Durer marveled: Here was a culture that must have one hundred Cellinis for Italy’s one. Charles had wanted Durer to see these things before they went to his mint, to be melted and recast as coins.”
