Tanky & Friends

Green velvet drapes kept the room dark and airless

Until on sunny days toward midsummer

The brass andirons caught a shaft of light

For twenty minutes in late afternoon

In a radiance dimly akin to happiness –

The dusty gleam of temporary wealth.

Anthony Hecht, excerpt from “Memory”, quoted in Christopher Ricks new book, True Friendship

For a few sunny days toward midsummer I had the chance to see off An Good Friend before he soon moves to another country. Fitting that we spent our afternoons paddling out to chill on a small pleasant island; set against the tide of the everyday, the occasion itself was a small pleasant island, a brief windfall of temporary wealth.
